Caption: Plutonic rock, polarised light micrograph. Plutonic is a general term for igneous rocks formed at great depth under the Earth's surface. Typical for this type of rock is the crystalline texture and a mineral mix consisting of feldspars (the elongate white crystals) and minerals from the amphibole group (coloured). This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
