Caption: Melaphyr rock. Polarised light micrograph of melaphyr, a volcanic rock with a typical porphrytic structure. Small voids in the finely textured basaltic host rock are fully or partly filled with quartz, calcite or other minerals (white areas). This thin section image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
