Caption: Amphibole mineral. Polarised light micrograph of a mineral from the amphibole group, possibly hornblende. Amphiboles are inosilicate-type minerals that are found in both igneous and metamorphic rocks. This sample is part of a large mono-crystalline section. The pattern and colouring here is due to the polarised light. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
