Caption: Norite rock. Polarised light micrograph of norite, a basic igneous rock made up of plagioclase and pyroxene, plus various other minerals. The main constituent in this sample is the white-grey plagioclase crystals, with their lamellar banding. The coloured interstitial pyroxenes are less common. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
