Caption: Granite rock. Polarised light micrograph of granite, a common and widespread igneous rock, which consists of quartz, alkali-feldspar, mica, and other minerals. Granites form in the lower parts of the Earth's continental crust, often by the melting and recrystallisation of older rock. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
