Caption: Peridotite rock. Polarised light micrograph of peridotite, a plutonic (intrusive) ultrabasic (low silica content) rock formed at great depth, where the Earth's crust changes into the semi-solid mantle. Most of the Earth's mass, notably the mantle, has a peridotitic composition. Many meteorites also have the same composition, which suggests that peridotite is a key building material for the whole solar system. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols').
