Caption: Erratic boulder of mica schist. This metamorphic rock is common in the Alps and other large mountain ranges. Metamorphic rocks are those that have been subjected to intense pressure and high temperatures deep below the Earth's surface. Later uplift and erosion exposes the rocks. In this case the boulder is an erractic, which means it was deposited here by a glacier, which carried it away from where it was originally found.
