Caption: Human egg. Light micrograph of a human secondary oocyte (mature egg), with its first polar body (dark dot, upper right). Before ovulation the egg undergoes meiotic division to create two cells: a secondary oocyte and a polar body. The polar body will degenerate, while the larger egg develops in preparation for fertilisation. The zona pellucida can be seen surrounding the ovum. This plays an important role in fertilisation by a spermatozoa (sperm). If fertilisation does not occur the zona pellucida is important in triggering the death of the oocyte.
