Caption: Fossil pinecones. Two halves of a fossil pine cone from now extinct pine trees: Araucaria mirabilis and Paraaraucaria. These fossils are from Jurassic deposits in Patagonia, Argentina, dating to around 200 million years ago. Studies have revealed that the trees stood 100 metres tall and were felled by severe volcanic eruptions. Their burial in volcanic ashes and rapid fossilisation explains the superb preservation of details.
