Caption: Ovarian follicle. Light micrograph of a section through the wall of an ovarian follicle, just before ovulation. The nuclei of the granulosa cells can be seen aligned along the basal lamina (vertical, centre). The cells of the internal theca (right) have grown in size (hypertrophy) in preparation for ovulation. This image was taken at the time of peak oestradiol levels. Oestradiol is an oestrogen hormone that is directly involved in the triggering of ovulation, which occurs when levels of oestradiol are at their highest.
