Caption: Milky Way galaxy. Artwork, based on infrared images from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, of the Milky Way galaxy. This research was published in 2008, and shows our galaxy having two major spiral arms and two minor ones, rather than four major ones, as previously thought. The two major arms are Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus. The two minor arms are Norma and Sagittarius. The galactic nucleus is shown to be bar-shaped. The survey also found a new spiral arm, called the Far-3 kiloparsec arm, lying along the central galactic bar.
