Caption: Graafian follicle. Light micrograph of a section through a mature Graafian follicle. The secondary oocyte (small round object, lower left) can be seen next to a large fluid filled cavity (antrum, white). The oocyte becomes an ovum (egg cell) when it is released into the oviduct (fallopian tube). The cumulus oophorus, made of enlarged granulosa cells can also be seen surrounding the oocyte. If it does not enter atresia (follicle death), this follicle will ovulate in about 40 days. Magnification: x108 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
