Caption: Narrowed neck artery. Frontal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) angiogram of the neck of a 65-year-old man with high blood pressure (hypertension). The head is at top and the upper body at bottom. The blood vessels can be seen as light grey lines. This patient has a narrowing (stenosis, centre left) of the right internal carotid artery. Stenoses are usually caused by fatty deposits (atheromas) accumulating on the arterial wall. This can lead to increased blood pressure and reduced blood supply. Angiograms are produced by injecting an X-ray opaque dye into blood vessels.
