Caption: Splitting of part of a transverse section of a log using a wedge and club hammer. The high elasticity of the seasoned wood is shown by the cleft running far ahead of the wedge tip. Wood cleaves more easily when split radially rather than parallel to the growth rings. Here the plane of cleavage is radially parallel to the grain.
