Caption: Narrowed heart artery, angiogram (X-ray). Heart of a 68-year-old man with a narrowing (stenosis) of the anterior descending branch (far left) of the left coronary artery. The branches of the left coronary artery are seen as white lines. Stenoses are usually caused by fatty deposits (atheromas) accumulating on the arterial wall. This can lead to increased blood pressure and reduced blood supply, which may cause angina and heart attacks. Angiograms are produced by injecting an X-ray opaque dye into blood vessels.
