Caption: Semionotus fish, illustration. These fish are an example of Holostean fish, those have retained certain characteristics from when they first evolved. Examples are the bowfins and the gars (or garpikes). There are eight living species, with many more known from the fossil record. These fish first evolved in the Triassic, around 250 million years ago. The fish depicted here are Semionotus fish, from the Jurassic (201 to 145 million years ago).
