Caption: Macro photograph of Soldier lichen (Cladonia floerkeana). Lichens are formed by the symbiotic association of a fungus and an alga. The alga is contained within the hyphae (filaments) of the fungus and so are protected from harsh conditions. The alga supplies the fungus with nutrients that it makes by photosynthesis. Magnification: x21 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
