Caption: Macro photograph of a section through a Peltigera rufescens lichen to show the Nostoc sp. endosymbiont cyanobacterium. Lichens are formed by the symbiotic association of a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium. The cyanobacterium is contained within the hyphae (filaments) of the fungus and so is protected from harsh conditions. The cyanobacterium supplies the fungus with nutrients that it makes by photosynthesis. Magnification: x42 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
