Caption: Macro photograph of common orange lichen (Xanthoria parietina) that has been cut open to reveal the endosymbiotic green algae. Lichens are formed by the symbiotic association of a fungus and an alga. The alga is contained within the hyphae (filaments) of the fungus and so are protected from harsh conditions. The alga supplies the fungus with nutrients that it makes by photosynthesis.
