Caption: Dazzle painted flying boat. Aerial view of a British flying boat (seaplane) painted in dazzle camouflage in flight during World War I. Dazzle camouflage was a form of colouration credited to the British marine artist Norman Wilkinson that was used extensively in WWI. It consisted of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours that interrupted and intersected each other. Unlike other forms of camouflage, it was designed to dazzle rather than camouflage ships and planes in order to make it difficult to judge their range, speed and heading. Photographed circa 1914-18.
