Caption: Gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica), X-ray. The Gaboon viper is the largest of the vipers. It belongs to the puff adder family and has an extremely venomous bite that can be fatal. Its fangs are the longest of any snake (nearly four centimetres in length). It is a docile snake and bites to humans are rare except when it is trodden on or otherwise disturbed. This snake inhabits the forests of Western Africa.
