Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cultured breast cancer cells grown on a glass plate. The uneven surface of these cells is typical of cancer cells. The cells may clump to form tumours, which often invade and destroy surrounding tissues. The purple cells are undergoing programmed cell death, or apoptosis. Apoptosis occurs when a cell becomes old or damaged. Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women. Magnification: x530 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
