Caption: Banded iceberg, Jones Sound, Grise Fiord, Nunavut, Canada. The dark blue bands were created when layers of ice froze and refroze over hundreds of years when it was still covering land. Over time, the movement of the ice sheet into the water gave birth to the iceberg. Most icebergs appear white due to tiny bubbles trapped in the ice that scatter light. Dense ice with little or no bubbles appears blue.
