Caption: Close-up of developing tadpoles of the common frog (Rana temporaria). The tadpoles' gills are seen protruding from the sides of their heads. These fine finger-like projections are highly vascularised, and allow the tadpole to absorb oxygen from the water. As it matures into an adult frog, the gills will be absorbed.
