Caption: Radial velocity planetary detection method, illustration. The radial velocity method to detect exoplanets, also called doppler spectroscopy, is based on the detection of variations in the velocity of a star due to the changing gravitational pull from a planet as it orbits the star. When the star moves towards the observer, its spectrum is blueshifted, while it is redshifted when it moves away from the observer. The first exoplanet detected using this method was discovered in 1995. As of 2016, around 582 extrasolar planets have been discovered using this method. Image published in 2007.
