Caption: Amantadine antiviral drug, molecular model. This drug, marketed as Symmetrel, is used to treat influenza A infection in adults. It interferes with an influenzavirus A ion channel protein, rendering the virus unable to shed its protein coat once inside a cell. As a result it cannot replicate its genetic material and infect further cells. Amantadine also appears to stimulate dopamine release in the brain, which means it can be used to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Atoms in this model are represented by coloured spheres; carbon is green, hydrogen is white and nitrogen is blue.
