Caption: Alderfly larva. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an alderfly larva (Sialis lutaria). At upper left is the head, showing a compound eye (dark brown). The feather-like structures on its body (centre) are gills. Alderfly larvae are aquatic and feed on other insects, small invertebrates and worms. The larval stage lasts for 1 to 2 years. Magnification: x6 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
