Caption: Human papilloma virus surface protein L1, molecular model. This is a complex made up of the protein L1, found in the capsid (outer protein coat) of the human papilloma virus (HPV). L1 spontaneously forms a complex like this which resembles HPV. These complexes have been used to develop a vaccine (called Gardasil) against the virus. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that causes warts on the skin or genitals, and in some women can lead to cervical cancer.
