Caption: Euglena sp., photosynthetic single-celled organisms in an algal bloom, light microscope footage. Various species of Euglena are commonly found in freshwater lakes, ponds and slow-moving rivers. They can convert energy from sunlight like plants, but can also survive without light and absorb nutrients from the water through osmosis. The cells have a flagellum and an eye spot (red), and can move towards light sources by beating the flagellum, propelling the cell through the water. They can change shape from a long thin form to a spherical shape, ranging from some 20 to 100 microns in length.
