It consists of four globin proteins (amino acid chains; magenta, beige, red and green). Each globin protein is wrapped around a haem group (cyan). This model of deoxyhaemoglobin, the molecule in its non-oxygen bound state, was produced as part of a study of the molecule's affinity and differences between various forms of the molecule's T-state (tense form).
