Caption: Atomic bomb destruction, Nagasaki, Japan. Footage of the damage to a torpedo testing basin in Nagasaki, Japan, part of the destruction caused by the atomic bomb dropped by a US bomber on 9 August 1945 during World War II. Known as Target J, this structure was around 1680 metres from ground zero. This footage includes collapsed and broken testing equipment, asbestos roofing lying on the floor, control panels, and US Army and US Navy officers. The final part of the clip shows the south wall of the building tilted inwards due to the pressure of the blast wave. The atomic explosion, equivalent to 21,000 tons of TNT, destroyed an area several kilometres across, killing an estimated 75,000 people. This was the second atomic bomb used in warfare, following the atomic bomb over Hiroshima three days earlier. Over 220,000 people died in both cities, and tens of thousands were injured. Japan surrendered a few days later.
