Caption: Atomic bomb destruction, Nagasaki, Japan. Footage of ruins in and around the Commercial School complex in Nagasaki, Japan, part of the destruction caused by the atomic bomb dropped by a US bomber on 9 August 1945 during World War II. These buildings were around 1100 metres from ground zero. This footage starts with a long shot of the Commercial School itself, and then pans to the right to show the ruins of the Municipal Tenement District in the valley. In the background are Shirayama School and Nagasaki Hospital. The clip concludes with another view of the Commercial School. The atomic explosion, equivalent to 21,000 tons of TNT, destroyed an area several kilometres across, killing an estimated 75,000 people. This was the second atomic bomb used in warfare, following the atomic bomb over Hiroshima three days earlier. Over 220,000 people died in both cities, and tens of thousands were injured. Japan surrendered a few days later.
