Caption: Bremelanotide drug molecule, computer model. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded; carbon (red), hydrogen (blue), nitrogen (yellow) and oxygen (turquoise). This drug is in trials (as of 2006) to treat both male and female sexual dysfunction. Unlike other such treatments it acts on the central nervous system, and not the vascular system. Therefore it increases sexual desire as well as genital arousal. Bremelanotide was developed from a drug unsuccessfully tested as a sunless tanning agent. It is administered as a nasal spray and, unlike viagra, can be used by those on nitrate medication for cardiovascular disease.
