Caption: African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) preening in shallow waters. Penguins are flightless birds which have adapted to swim in the sea. Other names for this penguin include the black-footed penguin and the jackass penguin (because of its braying donkey-like call). This penguin is found in breeding colonies on islands off Namibia and South Africa, and at a few places on the South African mainland. It spends much time at sea, feeding on fish, squid and crustaceans. It breeds and moults on land. It can reach a length of 50 centimetres. The pink patches over the eyes are blood-rich sweat glands that help cool the bird. Photographed on Boulders Beach, Western Cape, South Africa.
