Caption: Cholera intestinal infection, illustration. Cholera is a bacterial infection of the small intestine that is transmitted via contaminated food or water. The bacterium Vibrio cholerae (blue, not to scale) is seen being ingested in a glass of water, down the oesophagus and into the stomach. This bacterium produces a toxin (dark blue) that affects the intestines (cutaway in abdomen, and inset at lower left), causing diarrhoea and severe dehydration (inset shows release of water molecules, H2O). These symptoms of the disease may be fatal if left untreated.
