Caption: Mayan pyramid. Illustration of a Mayan step pyramid in Mexico. This is a religious structure with a temple building on top. The Maya were an ancient Mesoamerican civilization that inhabited southern Mexico and nearby areas for thousands of years from the second millennium BC to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. This illustration shows the outline for the Temple of Kukulcan, also known as El Castillo, in the Chichen Itza archaeological site in Yucatan, south-eastern Mexico. It was dedicated to the Mayan snake god Kukulkan ('Feathered Serpent'). Shown here is what is thought to be an older, inner pyramid, inside the larger one.
