Caption: Ophiolites are rock bodies that originate from mantle material that forms the oceanic crust. They occur as rocks in mountains onshore as a result of obduction, which means being emplaced on top of older continental rocks by uplift and other large-scale tectonic activity. Ophiolite is not a term for the rock's composition. An ophiolite may be composed of various igneous plutonic rocks, like spilites, serpentinites, harzburgite and other. This example is in Wadi Abyad, in the Al Hajar Mountains of northeastern Oman
