Caption: Herbert Aaron Hauptman (1917-2011), US mathematician. Hauptman studied at Columbia University, New York, USA, and then at the University of Maryland, obtaining his doctorate in 1955. It was his post-World War II work with US chemist Jerome Karle, at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC, that led to groundbreaking work in X-ray crystallography. For this work, Hauptman and Karle were jointly awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry: 'for their outstanding achievements in developing direct methods for the determination of crystal structure'. Hauptman was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1988.
