Caption: Scorpion fly mouth. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a close-up of the mouth of a scorpion fly (Panorpa sp.). The mouth is a long beak-like extension with its jaws at the very end (seen here). These jaws are serrated and specially adapted for chewing. The scorpion fly feeds on rotting fruit, dead insects and other carrion. Magnification: x50 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
