Caption: Dudley Robert Herschbach (born 1932), US chemist. Herschbach studied at Stanford University, and then at Harvard University, obtaining his doctorate in 1958. From 1959, he worked at the University of California at Berkeley, where he worked on molecular beam experiments. He continued this work when he moved back to Harvard University in the 1960s. It was this work that led to him being awarded a share of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The Nobel was awarded for contributions 'concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes'. Herschbach was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1967. Photographed in 1986.
