Caption: Charles Rabot (1856-1944). 1899 illustration of the French geographer, journalist and explorer Charles Rabot. In 1883 Rabot became the first person to climb Kebnekaise, the tallest mountain in Sweden. He led explorations and carried out detailed mapping of the island of Spitsbergen, Norway, and published numerous articles on the ethnography of indigenous Arctic peoples. A Swedish and Norwegian glacier, the French research base on Ny-Alesund in Spitsbergen, and Rabot Island, Antarctica, are named after him.
