Caption: Volkswagen emissions buyback cars in storage. These cars were bought back from their owners by Volkswagen after the discovery that the company had violated regulations relating to nitrogen oxide emissions. Known as the Volkswagen emissions scandal, the discovery was made in 2015. Cars emitting 40 times the permitted limits had been sold between 2009 and 2015. Here, thousands of Volkswagen diesel vehicles are parked at the Pontiac Silverdome, waiting to be fixed. Photographed in March 2017, in Pontiac, Michigan, USA.
