Caption: Measuring specific heat capacity. Apparatus used to measure the specific heat capacity of a metal block (cylinder, centre left) and a beaker of water (cylinder, centre right). Both are insulated and of known masses. They are heated with electric elements connected to power supplies (top left and right) via joulemeters (lower left and right), which measure the energy (heat) supplied to them. A known amount of energy is supplied and the rise in temperature is measured by temperature probes and recorded by a data logger (beige, centre). The results can then be viewed as a graph on a computer screen.
