Caption: Timelapse footage of the Milky Way moving across the sky over a group of amateur astronomers on a Messier marathon. A Messier marathon is an event in which people try to observe as many of the Messier objects as possible in one night. Charles Messier compiled a list of 110 astronomical objects in the late 18th century. They are scattered across the sky, and their observability depends on the latitude and the time of year. It is usually attempted in late March and early April (this was in April 2011). Red lights are used by astronomers as they do not affect the dark-adapted eye.
