Caption: Heart valves and strings, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This dissection shows both the mitral valve (centre) and the aortic valve (upper centre). The mitral valve lies between the left ventricle of the heart (bottom) and the left atrium (not seen). The aortic valve (upper centre) is where the blood passes from the left ventricle into the aorta (top right). Also seen here are the heart strings (chordae tendineae, thread-like), the papilliary muscles (thick bands at lower right and left), and the trabeculae carneae (columnar structures on the inner wall of the ventricle).
