Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the antenna of a female Aedes aegypti mosquito. Yellow fever and dengue fever carrier. Aedes aegypti can also transmit Zika virus to humans. Zika fever was first discovered in equatorial Africa and Asia in the 1950s. From 2014-16 Zika fever has spread to South America and the equatorial islands in the Pacific. There is a possible link between Zika fever and microcephaly in newborn babies of mothers who have been infected by the Zika virus. Magnification: x18 when the shortest axis is printed at 25 millimetres.
