Caption: Collapsed lung. Illustration based on a 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the lungs of a patient who has a collapsed lung (blue, right). The patient is seen from the front, with the left lung in a collapsed state. The right-hand lung (at left) is seen in the normal state. A collapsed lung is caused by a pneumothorax, a build-up of air between the lung and chest wall. Pneumothorax can be due to trauma or lung rupture. It causes shortness of breath and pain on breathing. It is treated by inserting a tube to drain the air over a period of days, allowing the lung to re-inflate.
