Caption: Artificial lake island. Aerial photograph of an artificial island being created in the Markermeer, a lake in the central Netherlands region formed from earlier land reclamation projects. This current project is called Marker Wadden. The islands are being created by the environmental organisation Vereniging Natuurmonumenten, and are intended to increase the number of waterbirds feeding and breeding in this wetlands region. The first island built by this project (seen here) was completed in September 2016. Four other islands are scheduled for completion by 2020.
