Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Deep brain stimulation surgery. Neurological test being carried out on a 59-year-old man with Parkinson's disease during deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. This neurosurgical treatment involves the placement of an implanted pulse generator (IPG) in the chest, which sends electrical impulses to specific areas of the brain through electrodes implanted below the scalp and inserted through the skull. The electrodes provide continuous electrical stimulation, which blocks the signals that cause the tremors of Parkinson's disease. A stereotactic frame is being used to allow accurate electrode insertion. The neurological tests are designed to assess the patient's brain function during the surgery.
