Silicon chip surfaces can be constructed by standard photolithography and microfabrication techniques. This silicon surface has been etched to created 10 x 10 micron pillars. These pillar surfaces can be used to bind DNA for purification with follow-up DNA amplification using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Purified DNA can effectively be used in DNA amplification-based biosensors and biochips. Applications for these biosensors and biochips include: genetic screening, disease diagnosis and new drug development.
